Job Summary
Medical Laboratory Scientist II (MLS II)
CLIA Role: Testing Personnel / General Supervisor (High Complexity Testing)

The Medical Laboratory Scientist II (MLS II), in their role as Testing Personnel as defined by CLIA, may perform waived and non-waived testing. Each individual performs only those tests authorized by the Laboratory Director that require a degree of skill commensurate with their education, training, experience, and technical abilities.

Under general supervision, and after successful completion of orientation, training, and competency assessment, the MLS II performs all tests in accordance with the laboratory's standard operating procedures. The MLS II works independently in an efficient and organized manner to ensure accurate results and records. This work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret test results used by providers in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

As defined by CLIA, the MLS II may occasionally be delegated responsibilities of a General Supervisor if the regulatory experience requirement is met. Under general supervision of the Clinical Manager and Clinical Supervisors, the MLS II may assist with tasks such as quality control review, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting, training, competency assessment, operations, and inventory management.

Essential Functions (Key Roles & Responsibilities)
CLIA Responsibilities: General Supervisor - High Complexity Testing
Assigned if experience requirements are met.

Be accessible to test personnel during testing to provide consultation for resolving technical problems per established procedures.

Provide day-to-day supervision of high-complexity testing performed by qualified personnel.

Be on-site to provide direct supervision when high complexity testing is performed by individuals qualified prior to 1/19/1993.

Monitor test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure acceptable analytical performance.

Follow procedures for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and recordkeeping.

Maintain records to demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested like patient specimens.

Adhere to quality control policies and document related activities.

Follow established protocols when test systems deviate from performance specifications.

Identify and resolve problems that may affect test performance or result reporting; escalate as necessary.

Document corrective actions for deviations in test systems.

If qualified under §493.1489(b)(5), perform high-complexity testing only under direct supervision of a qualified general supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities (Under Direction of Clinical Manager and Clinical Supervisor)
Perform qualitative and quantitative testing on blood, plasma, and other body fluids using manual or automated methods.

Prepare samples and reagents in accordance with lab policies.

Operate instruments per procedures or operator manuals.

Conduct routine maintenance, function checks, and calibrations; document accordingly.

Troubleshoot instrument malfunctions and alert supervisors when needed.

Perform and document quality control; manage out-of-range results and corrective actions.

Ensure accurate interpretation and reporting of results.

Identify and address aberrant results and contributing factors.

Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement activities.

Handle and analyze proficiency testing samples.

Complete and maintain competency for all assigned instruments and methods.

Stay current with laboratory advancements and complete required training.

Train new staff and participate in competency assessments.

Support evaluation or implementation of new methodologies or instruments.

Help prioritize and organize daily workload and support team members.

May supervise technical and non-technical staff and assume leadership duties as needed.

Review the work of others including test results, QC logs, and maintenance records.

Report safety concerns using the Safety Reporting System.

Follow hospital and lab policies, including safety and infection control guidelines.

Perform support services such as answering phones, reporting critical results, and managing pending logs.

Monitor and manage inventory or communicate supply needs.

Perform general lab duties as needed (e.g., specimen processing, cleaning, storing/discarding samples).

Bachelor's Degree

Field of Study:
Medical Laboratory Science, Chemical Science, Physical Science, or Biological Science

Required/Preferred:

Qualifications:

Must possess a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Laboratory Science or in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science from an accredited college or university
OR

Meet alternative qualifications as described in the Federal Register, 42 CFR, Subpart M §§493.1403-1495.
