Virginia Tech (VT) and its health system partner, Carilion Clinic (CC), are recruiting to fill a tenure-track/tenured faculty position in implementation science and medicine, with a focus on computer science and analytics at the assistant, associate or full professor level at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine to be located on the VTC Health Science and Technology campus ( in Roanoke, Virginia. The faculty member will be part of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine’s Department of Health Systems and Implementation Science, as well as Carilion Clinic’s extensive clinical enterprise.

 

Applicant eligibility requirements include: an PhD MD/PHd, OR DO/PhD degree; if early career, postdoctoral research experience, research fellowship or a combined clinical and research fellowship are preferred; a record of significant accomplishment of implementation research innovation and productivity as demonstrated through high quality impactful publications in leading scientific and/or medical journals; and a record of funding. Candidates considered for positions at the associate or full professor rank are expected to have substantial active extramural research funding, particularly from the NIH or other federal agencies, foundations and/or industry. 

 

The position will be employed by Carilion Clinic and will include both research and clinical duties with a primary emphasis on research. The applicant will conduct research in both the inpatient and outpatient settings working closely to coordinate projects with the medical leadership in quality and population health at Carilion Clinic. The specific focus of research is on improving quality of care, implementing evidence-based practices, improving the health of the populations we serve, and reducing low-value care. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to envision the strategic growth plan for Implementation Science research and operationalization within these organizations. Candidates should use translational and/or clinical approaches, using tools and frameworks of implementation science, pragmatic trial design, epidemiology, and population health science. Specific areas of interest for growth include: i) cancer disease and prevention; ii) endocrine disease and related diseases; and iii) health care delivery science. Innovation in artificial intelligence and computational modeling used in the context implementation science is welcome.

 

Successful candidates will be expected to maintain a high-quality, extramurally-funded research program, and either maintain or develop high-profile national/global recognition as leaders in their respective fields of implementation science and medicine. Successful physician candidates are required to be Board-certified in their training specialty and will contribute to the training/mentoring of graduate and medical students as well as residents and fellows. If appropriate, the individual will also be expected to lead a sub-specialty clinic in their areas of specialization.
