The Team Development Educator (TDE) position is a 3-season position spanning early April through the end of October with the possibility to extend the position over the winter months. This position will focus on Chewonki’s team development curriculum through the facilitation of low and high elements and integration of problem solving group challenges with program content and schedules. The TDE will work closely with the Associate Director of Team Development and Logistics (ADTDL) to support all of team development across Chewonki programs, including Outdoor Classroom, Camp Chewonki, Elementary & Middle School, Maine Coast Semester, and Waypoint.
During the spring and fall, the TDE will primarily work with the Outdoor Classroom program team, focussing on three areas; facilitation of high and low elements for Outdoor Classroom groups, occasionally leading Outdoor Classroom residential environmental education programs, and playing a key role in supporting field programs.
During the summer season, the TDE will take on responsibilities within Camp Chewonki as a Team Development Activity Head. Camp Chewonki is a nature-based overnight camp and expedition-based youth leadership program for boys, girls, and non-binary children. The Activity Heads are responsible for preparing and facilitating team and community building games and activities while maintaining activity equipment and program areas.
In addition to their job responsibilities by season, the TDE is expected to take initiative and be part of the greater community, to support the Chewonki mission of promoting personal growth, natural history, and community development.
Salary for the Camp Chewonki season starts at a base rate of $4,500.00 for approximately a 9 week season. Salary for the Outdoor Classroom season (fall and spring) starts at $410.00 per week. Housing is included throughout employment and meals are served during Chewonki programs.
Educators accrued one half (.5 day) Paid Time Off (PTO) day each pay period. PTO is taken with supervisor approval in consideration of program schedule.
Health insurance is available in accordance with the Affordable Care Act as a Category C employee.
At least 21 years old
Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a related field, i.e. environmental education, recreation, ecology
Current Wilderness First Responder Certification (preferred certifying bodies are Wilderness Medical Associates and Wilderness Medical Institute)
Valid Driver’s License approved by Chewonki’s insurance carrier
Pass background check
