Position Title: Transit Police Officer

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is hiring for the position of Transit Police Officer. Candidates must complete the National Testing Network (NTN) Frontline National Exam and Public Safety Self-Assessment to be considered for the position. The testing period will end on September 30, 2024.

Salary Information:
$83,647 - $89,631 as of September 1, 2024. Starting salary for Cadets (Police Academy) is $30.00 per hour.

The GCRTA Police Department provides a safe and orderly environment within the transit system, promoting public confidence, enhancing system use, and protecting against crime and terrorism. The department collaborates with regional partners to respond to and recover from natural and man-made disasters.

About Us:
The GCRTA Police Department is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in Cuyahoga County and Ohio, covering approximately 458 square miles and 59 municipalities. The department includes multiple divisions such as the Detective Bureau, Traffic Unit, Canine Unit, and Homeland Security.

Job Requirements:

Age: Must be 21 years of age at the time of application and appointment.
Citizenship: Must be a U.S. citizen or possess a permanent resident card and reside in Ohio.
Education: High school graduate or GED certificate required.
Driver's License: Must have a valid Ohio driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Vision: 20/200 correctable to 20/20 in both eyes, with no color blindness.
Physical Agility: A valid Tri-C physical agility certificate (dated on or after August 20, 2023) is required to be considered eligible. If this certificate cannot be provided, the candidate's name may be removed from the candidate list.
Academy Certification: OPOTA certification is preferred but not required.
Experience: Prior experience as a law enforcement officer in Ohio is preferred.
Candidates must pass a psychological assessment, medical examination (including drug and alcohol screening), and a thorough background check. They must also achieve certifications necessary for using criminal justice systems such as LEADS, and any other certifications required by government regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Successful candidates who are not already OPOTA certified must be able to enter the Police Academy class beginning January 2025. Lateral transfer candidates must have a minimum of one year of full-time law enforcement experience in Ohio and hold a current OPOTA certificate.

Job Description: Transit Police Officers patrol assigned areas to prevent disorder, criminal activity, and terrorism. They protect RTA passengers and employees within the RTA designated area and areas of concurrent jurisdiction. Officers maintain peace and order on the rail, buses, stations, platforms, and other RTA properties. Duties include preparing reports, conducting patrols, and responding to incidents.

Working Conditions: Officers may encounter various environmental conditions, including inclement weather, hazardous materials, and loud noises. The role may involve physical demands such as chasing and subduing suspects, rescuing victims, and handling stressful situations. Officers must be mentally and physically prepared for unforeseen emergencies and may be required to work rotating shifts, extended hours, and emergency call-outs.
