The Role
As the Vice President, External Affairs, you'll lead efforts to elevate our brand, expand our reach, and drive awareness of our mission. You'll oversee strategic communications, media relations, crisis communications, digital strategy, and stakeholder engagement. Reporting to the Chief Impact Officer and working closely with the CEO, you'll serve as a key thought leader and partner in shaping our organizational growth and reputation.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Shape and execute an external affairs strategy that enhances our reputation in the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors.
Develop messaging and branding initiatives that effectively communicate our mission.
Monitor public perception and manage reputational risks.
Content Creation & Messaging
Lead the development of compelling content, including reports, press releases, speeches, and social media materials.
Ensure all communications reflect our brand and resonate with key audiences.
Oversee production of donor-facing materials and major publications.
Media & Public Relations
Build and maintain strong relationships with media outlets, journalists, and influencers.
Develop and implement strategies to increase visibility and awareness.
Lead crisis communication efforts when needed.
Digital & Social Media Strategy
Oversee website management, social media, and digital campaigns.
Ensure brand consistency across all online platforms.
Leverage digital tools to enhance engagement with key stakeholders.
Stakeholder Engagement & Event Management
Work closely with the Partnerships team to identify new funding opportunities.
Represent the organization at events, conferences, and public engagements.
Plan and execute organizational participation at major global convenings.
Internal Communications & Team Leadership
Partner with the People & Culture team to develop internal communication strategies.
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing External Affairs team.
Track the effectiveness of external affairs strategies and refine approaches as needed.
What We're Looking For
Experience: 15+ years in strategic communications, public affairs, or related fields, with at least 7 years in a leadership role.
Skills: Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling abilities; strong media relations expertise; digital marketing and social media strategy experience.
Leadership: Proven ability to manage teams, build partnerships, and lead complex initiatives.
Strategic Thinking: A proactive and innovative approach to external affairs, branding, and communications.
Commitment to Social Impact: A deep passion for driving meaningful change.
Ability to Travel: Occasional travel may be required.
