Position Title: Transit Police Officer

The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (GCRTA) is hiring for the position of Transit Police Officer. Candidates are required to complete the National Testing Network (NTN) Frontline National Exam and Public Safety Self-Assessment to be considered for the position.

Salary information while in the Police Academy: $30.00 per hour.

Transit Police work directly with regional partners to respond to and recover from natural and man-made disaster.

About us:

Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority Police Department is one of the largest law enforcement agencies in Cuyahoga County, and one of the largest in the state of Ohio. We cover approximately 458 square miles and 59 municipalities throughout the county. The department is comprised of multiple divisions which includes but is not limited to Detective Bureau, Traffic unit, Canine & Homeland Security.

Job Requirements:

Age: Be 21 years of age at the time of application and appointment

Citizenship Required: Must be a U.S. Citizen or possess a permanent resident card and a resident of the State of Ohio.

High School Grad/GED: Be a high school graduate or hold a G.E.D. Certificate

Valid OHIO Driver's License: Possess a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record

Ability to Read/Speak English: Yes

Vision: 20/20 correctable to 20/20 vision in both eyes, with an absence of color blindness

College: College preferred but not required.

Academy Certification: OPOTA Not required but preferred.

Prior Experience: Experience as a law enforcement officer in the State of Ohio preferred

PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAMINATION:

Administered by Police Training Academy at Tri C Western Campus, Parma, Ohio. Applicants can contact Cuyahoga Community College at 216-987-3033 or email.

You do not need a physical agility certificate to take the exam. A valid Tri-C physical agility certificate on or after April 13, 2024, will be accepted.

**To be hired for the end of June 2025 and January 2026 Academy you will need to complete the TRI-C physical agility on May 18th, 2025 at the latest. **

If a valid TRI-C physical agility certificate cannot be provided, your name may be removed from the Police Officer candidate list.

**Applicants are responsible for payment of a $70 test and any other fees associated with the Tri-C Police Physical Agility testing directly to Cuyahoga Community College.

**To be hired for the end of June 2025 and January 2026 Academy you will need to complete the TRI-C physical agility on May 18th, 2025 at the latest. **

Applicants must be able to obtain passing scores on NTN's Frontline National Exam and Public Safety Self Assessment to be considered for the position.

The performance of these duties maybe required at any time of the day or night, any day and night of the week. The position is a bargaining unit position. This position is also safety sensitive and subject to random drug testing.

Applicants must achieve a satisfactory evaluation on a psychological assessment, medical examination (including drug and alcohol screening) and must meet the criteria established for a background check.

Applicant must attain qualifications through training leading to certifications to use systems Criminal Justice Systems the Law Enforcement Automated Data System (LEADS), and such certifications that might be required by government regulatory agencies such as the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Successful candidates must display sound judgment and be able to interact with the general public in a variety of situations, display initiative, discern the emotional state of others and make an appropriate and thoughtful response.

Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA) - Basic Police Training certification, preferred.

Applicants must pass a thorough background investigation. Applicants are required to provide originals of the following documents at the time of the Personal History Statement. Past and present work history and personal references will be reviewed.

Applicants may be accepted as lateral transfer candidates under the following conditions:

· Have a minimum of one (1) consecutive year of full-time law enforcement experience in any Police Department established pursuant to Ohio law

· Hold a current law enforcement OPOTA certificate

A lateral transfer is eligible for a starting salary (below) based on qualifications and whole years of law enforcement experience (partial years of service will not be considered). Salary up to $90,548. Depending on experience.

A lateral transfer does not need to take the NTN test and is encouraged to apply online.

Job Description :
Duties: Patrol assigned areas with the purpose of preventing disorder, criminal activity, and terrorism. Protects RTA passengers and employees within the RTA designated area and municipal area of concurrent jurisdiction. Maintains peace and order on the rail, buses, stations, platforms, and any other property of RTA or areas of concurrent jurisdiction. Prepares reports and maintains associated responsibilities concerning reported information. Performs patrol duties specific to assignment (e.g., bus, radio patrol car, plainclothes, train and station, derailment, etc.).

This Person must be able to communicate effectively to transmit information via the radio and talk to victims, suspects, etc. This person must be able to meet established physical and medical requirements including good physical strength and agility; weight must be in proportion to height; must have skill in foot/hand/eye coordination and a high degree of concentration to operate a vehicle, weapon, and other equipment required to fulfill essential job duties; must have the strength to pull, lift, or push 50-pound objects on a frequent basis and up to 100 pounds on an infrequent basis. This person must have the flexibility to bend, twist, reach, and the mobility to climb crawl, walk; and the stamina to exert oneself throughout the day in all weather conditions.

Mental Demands: Reading, watching, studying, observing, focused listening and evaluating. Ability to give, receive, and analyze information and prepare written materials. Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written); interpret policy and procedures. Ability to remember names, faces, and details of incidents. While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly exposed to stressful situations, which may cause the employee to experience feelings of anxiety and/or depression. Must maintain emotional control when under stress. Must be able to work rotating shifts, extended hours, and emergency call-outs. May be required to attend local or out-of-town conferences, seminars, etc. Must be mentally and physically prepared for unforeseen emergencies at all times.
